NETGEAR Orbi is a Mesh Wi-Fi system, in which several units work together as a single wireless network, and it is set up in a few steps with the Orbi app. This guide covers the basic steps. Port colours, LED behaviour and box contents can vary by model; check your model's manual for details.
What's in the Box
- Orbi Router (main unit)
- Orbi Satellite (one or more satellite units)
- Ethernet cable
- Power adapters
- Quick start guide
Step 1: Download the Orbi App
Download the NETGEAR Orbi app from the App Store or Google Play. Setup is done through this app.
Step 2: Connect the Router
- Connect your modem to the Orbi Router's Internet port (yellow on many models) with an Ethernet cable
- Plug in the router and power it on
- Wait for the LED on the router to change from pulsing white to solid white (this can take a few minutes)
Step 3: Complete the Setup in the App
- Open the Orbi app and create an account
- Add a new Orbi system
- Set the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password
- If the app suggests it, run the firmware update
Step 4: Place the Satellite Units
Place the satellite roughly halfway between the router and the area with weak coverage. When powered on, the satellite tries to sync with the router; if it does not, you can restart pairing with the Sync button on both devices.
Troubleshooting
The LED meanings below follow NETGEAR's Orbi support page; some models may differ.
- LED pulsing white: The device is starting up or trying to sync, please wait
- Satellite LED amber: The connection to the router is fair; move the satellite a little closer to the router
- LED magenta: On the router, there is no internet connection (check the modem connection); on a satellite, it could not sync with the router
