What is QuickDesk Pro?

  • In KVM use, a hardware KVM device that carries the target PC's HDMI video and USB keyboard/mouse input over IP.
  • Independent of the operating system: as long as the computer powers on and outputs video over HDMI, it shows the boot screen, the BIOS/UEFI menu and a blue screen.
  • No software, agent or driver is installed on the target PC.
  • Access is through a standard web browser.
  • In remote PLC maintenance, the PLC is connected to the device's LAN port over Ethernet.

What it is not

  • It does not replace the PLC programming software; you program the PLC with suitable programming software on your own computer.
  • It does not fix hardware faults remotely, such as a failed power supply, motherboard or graphics card; these need on-site work.
  • It is not a general-purpose IoT gateway or data acquisition platform.
  • It does not replace your PLC, SCADA, VPN or firewall; it works alongside them as a separate access channel.
  • It is not designed for everyday screen sharing or video conferencing.

Direct Remote PLC Maintenance

In remote PLC maintenance, the PLC is connected to the QuickDesk Pro's LAN port over Ethernet and placed on the same subnet. The remote engineer finds the PLC in the programming software on their own computer (for example TIA Portal or STEP 7-MicroWIN SMART) as if on site; access is opened after ZTNA authentication, traffic is encrypted end to end, and no static IP or router configuration is required. PLCs from Siemens, Schneider Electric, Mitsubishi, Omron, Beckhoff, Keyence, LS Electric, Panasonic and Inovance are supported; your model's compatibility and the required network settings are assessed together before installation.

Hardware-level KVM, Remote OS Installation and BIOS/OS Recovery

Technical details are under "Know more" on each card.

BIOS / UEFI Access

See the boot screen and the BIOS/UEFI menu remotely and change settings with the keyboard and mouse.

Know more
  • The picture is taken from the HDMI signal, so the screen is visible even when the operating system is not running, as long as the computer powers on and outputs video over HDMI.
  • Recognised over USB as a standard keyboard/mouse; no driver or additional software is needed.
  • BIOS changes such as boot order and disk settings can be made remotely.

Remote Windows Installation and File Transfer via Virtual USB

Mount an ISO image on the target PC as a virtual USB drive; reinstall Windows or Linux remotely and transfer patches, drivers and backups in both directions.

Know more
  • Over USB the device presents itself to the target PC as a keyboard/mouse and as a virtual USB drive; no driver or software installation is required.
  • The Windows, Linux or recovery-environment ISO is uploaded to the device or fetched from a download link, then mounted as virtual media from the web panel.
  • From the KVM screen you enter the BIOS/UEFI, set the boot order to the virtual drive and complete the operating system installation remotely.
  • While the operating system is running, the same drive is used to send and receive files; clipboard text is shared through the browser.
  • Installation time depends on the image size and the connection speed on site; the operating system licence and drivers are your organisation's responsibility.

Operating System Recovery

When Windows does not start, apply safe mode, startup repair or system restore steps remotely.

Know more
  • Read the blue-screen stop code directly from the screen.
  • Enter safe mode and recovery menus without a site visit.
  • Roll back a faulty update remotely.
  • The outcome depends on the fault; a failed power supply, motherboard or graphics card needs on-site work.

Remote Power Control

Restart a frozen PC if GPIO wiring is in place; power on a switched-off PC if it supports Wake-on-LAN and the settings are made.

Know more
  • GPIO power/reset control requires wiring to the computer's power/reset connection; suitability is checked at installation.
  • Wake-on-LAN wakes a computer that is off or asleep and must be enabled in the BIOS and network card. It does not restart a frozen computer.
  • At unmanned sites, the first response can be made without travelling there.

Local Display Output

The picture is also passed to the on-site monitor through the device's HDMI output (up to 4K@60Hz).

Know more
  • The engineer can watch the same screen remotely while the operator works locally.
  • Around 100 ms latency with hardware video decoding.
  • Actual performance depends on network conditions on site.

Connectivity Options

Dual Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi and 4G LTE. The device reconnects automatically after a link drop.

Know more
  • Works over the corporate network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
  • At sites with mobile coverage, 4G LTE can provide a second path independent of the corporate network.
  • If automatic failover between links is required, it is verified separately for the project.
  • Satellite connectivity can be assessed for specific projects.

Planned Together with Your Security Policies

QuickDesk Pro does not replace your security architecture; it is installed inside it as a controlled access channel.

Zero Trust Access

In the Zero Trust (ZTNA) model, the user's identity is verified before a connection is made; traffic is encrypted end to end.

Know more
  • "Authenticate first, then connect" (hardware-level ZTNA).
  • Helps reduce the risk of unauthorised access and lateral movement.
  • Can also be used alongside your existing VPN infrastructure.

NAT Traversal and Network Fit

Thanks to NAT traversal support, in many networks a static IP and port forwarding are not needed.

Know more
  • Which connections and ports are opened is decided with your IT team before installation.
  • Details such as connection direction and encryption method are provided for your security review in the technical documents.
  • Network segmentation is planned according to your existing policies.

Cloud or On-Premise Server

The management server can be installed in your own infrastructure; traffic then passes through a server you control.

Know more
  • A private deployment option is available.
  • Can be considered for pharmaceutical, energy and public-sector projects where data is expected to stay in-house.
  • Where data is stored and regulatory compliance depend on how the installation is configured and on your policies.
  • The on-premise deployment guide is shared with your IT team on request.

Runs Alongside Your Stack

Can be used alongside your existing PLC, SCADA, VPN and firewall infrastructure. The required connections, access permissions and network segmentation are assessed with your IT team before installation.

Know more
  • Under normal conditions you keep using your existing remote access method.
  • QuickDesk Pro is a separate access channel used when that method does not work; for this, the device needs a usable network connection and a proper access configuration.
  • It is not a cybersecurity product on its own; it should be positioned together with your access policies.

When Does It Make the Difference?

Typical situations that software-based remote access (TeamViewer, AnyDesk, VPN + RDP) cannot reach.

What if the SCADA/HMI PC shows a blue screen on the night shift?

The engineer connects from a browser, reads the stop code first-hand and intervenes from the recovery menu.

Step by step
  1. An alert comes in; the engineer connects from a browser with an authorised account.
  2. The blue-screen stop code is read directly from the screen.
  3. If GPIO wiring is in place, the PC is restarted remotely and the issue is handled from the BIOS or recovery menu.

What if a Windows update leaves the HMI unable to boot?

Because the boot menu is visible remotely, safe mode, startup repair or system restore can be applied without a site visit.

Step by step
  1. The boot process is watched remotely to see where it fails.
  2. Advanced startup options are opened.
  3. Safe mode, startup repair or system restore is applied.

What if Windows has to be reinstalled from scratch?

The installation ISO is mounted as a virtual USB drive, the boot order is changed in the BIOS and the operating system is installed remotely without a site visit.

Step by step
  1. The Windows or Linux ISO image is uploaded to the device or fetched from a download link.
  2. The image is mounted on the target PC as a virtual USB drive from the web panel; the PC sees it like a plugged-in installation stick.
  3. From the KVM screen the BIOS/UEFI is opened, the boot order is set to the virtual drive and the installation is completed remotely. Licences and drivers remain your organisation's.

What if a patch, driver or backup file has to reach the PC on site?

Files are sent to the target PC through the virtual USB drive; log and backup files are brought back the same way.

Step by step
  1. The file is uploaded to the device from the web panel and presented to the target PC as a virtual drive.
  2. If the operating system is not running, the file is still reachable from the BIOS or a recovery environment.
  3. Log and backup files are copied to the virtual drive and downloaded to the remote engineer's computer.

What if the engineering PC attached to the PLC freezes?

In KVM use, the PC is restarted remotely, the boot process is watched and the problem is examined; the existing connection between the PLC and the PC is kept.

Step by step
  1. If GPIO wiring is in place, the frozen PC is restarted remotely (Wake-on-LAN does not restart a frozen computer).
  2. The boot and BIOS stages are watched to find the cause.
  3. The engineering software and its licence stay on the customer's PC; no licence is moved.

What about an unmanned site the corporate network does not reach?

Where there is mobile coverage, 4G LTE can provide an access path independent of the corporate network.

Step by step
  1. The device is added to the industrial PC at the pumping station, substation or field site.
  2. The 4G LTE connection is tested on site during the survey.
  3. Physical hardware faults still need an on-site visit; the first diagnosis is done remotely.

QuickDesk Pro and the Alternatives

Additional Capabilities (Secondary Use)

The two main uses of QuickDesk Pro are hardware-level remote access to computers and remote PLC maintenance. The same hardware also supports other operating modes that can be assessed per project.

Show additional capabilities
  • Remote PLC maintenance: programming a PLC remotely by connecting it to the device's LAN port; details in Direct Remote PLC Maintenance.
  • Serial and I/O: RS232/485 and DI/DO inputs with programmable local alarm logic.
  • Network device console access: connect to a switch or router console port to restore the network after a misconfiguration.
  • OOB gateway mode: access devices on a private network via RDP, VNC, SSH and HTTP.
  • Headless servers: vendor-neutral console view for systems without iLO/iDRAC.

These features should not be positioned as a replacement for a general-purpose IoT gateway or data acquisition platform; suitability is assessed together per project.

Questions About QuickDesk Pro

What is QuickDesk Pro?

QuickDesk Pro (model QD-RMP10) is an industrial hardware KVM-over-IP device (KVM: keyboard, video, mouse) that carries a compatible computer's HDMI video output and USB keyboard/mouse input over an IP network. It gives remote screen, keyboard and mouse access to engineering, SCADA and HMI PCs independently of the operating system, including the BIOS/UEFI screen. No software is installed on the target PC; access is through a web browser. By mounting an ISO image on the virtual USB drive you can reinstall Windows or Linux remotely and send files to or receive files from the target PC. In addition, a PLC connected to the device's LAN port can be programmed and monitored directly from a remote location.

Can Windows be installed remotely with QuickDesk Pro?

Yes. Besides acting as a keyboard and mouse over USB, QuickDesk Pro presents itself to the target PC as a virtual USB drive. The ISO image of Windows, Linux or a recovery environment is uploaded to the device or fetched by the device from a download link; the image is then mounted as virtual media from the web panel and appears on the target PC like a plugged-in USB installation stick. From the KVM screen the engineer enters the BIOS/UEFI, sets the boot order to that drive and completes the installation remotely from start to finish. A SCADA/HMI or engineering PC whose disk has been wiped, that no longer boots or that needs re-imaging can therefore be rebuilt without a site visit. Conditions: the PC must power on and output video over HDMI; installation time depends on the image size and the connection speed on site; the operating system licence, drivers and application installs are your organisation's responsibility. The same virtual drive is also used for two-way transfer of patches, drivers, backups and log files while the operating system is running.

When is QuickDesk Pro useful?

When software-based remote access does not work: the operating system does not start, a blue screen, a system stuck in BIOS, a boot failure after a faulty update, or a freeze. As long as the computer powers on and outputs video over HDMI, you can see the screen and enter the BIOS/UEFI and recovery menus. A frozen computer can be restarted remotely if GPIO wiring to its power/reset line is in place; a computer that is off can be powered on remotely if it supports Wake-on-LAN. Hardware faults such as a failed power supply, motherboard or graphics card require on-site work. Gaining access does not mean the fault will necessarily be fixed; the device does not fix faults by itself, and an authorised engineer carries out the intervention.

Does QuickDesk Pro connect directly to the PLC?

Yes, it can work in two ways. In remote PLC maintenance, the PLC is connected with an Ethernet cable to the QuickDesk Pro's LAN port; the remote engineer accesses the supported PLC with the programming software on their own computer (for example STEP 7-MicroWIN SMART or TIA Portal) as if on site. This requires the PLC and the device's LAN port to be on the same subnet, the PLC to be added to the device in the PLC management client, and the programming software and its licence to be on the remote engineer's computer. PLCs from Siemens, Schneider Electric, Mitsubishi, Omron, Beckhoff, Keyence, LS Electric, Panasonic and Inovance are supported. In KVM use, the device connects over HDMI and USB to the engineering PC that programs the PLC or to a SCADA/HMI computer; the existing connection between the PLC and the PC is kept, and the programming software and its licence stay on the on-site computer. Compatibility and the required network settings are assessed before installation.

How is it different from TeamViewer, AnyDesk or RDP?

These tools require the target PC to be on and its operating system to be running. QuickDesk Pro captures the picture from the HDMI signal, so it is independent of the operating system; as long as the computer outputs video, it gives access on the boot screen, in BIOS or after Windows has crashed. You can keep using your existing tools for everyday remote work; QuickDesk Pro is an additional access path for situations in which they do not work.

How does it work with our existing VPN and firewall policies?

The device provides hardware-level Zero Trust access (ZTNA: authentication before connection) and NAT traversal. In many installations this can reduce the need for port forwarding and traditional VPN tunnels. QuickDesk Pro can be used alongside your existing VPN and firewall infrastructure. The required connections, access permissions, network segmentation and the choice between a cloud and an on-premise server are assessed with your IT team before installation. To provide access when the corporate VPN is down, the device needs a usable network connection (Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 4G) and a proper access configuration.

How is remote access secured?

It uses the Zero Trust (ZTNA) approach based on "authenticate first, then connect"; access is granted only to authorised users and traffic is encrypted end to end. The management server can optionally be installed on-premise, in which case traffic passes through a server under your control. Where data is stored and regulatory compliance still depend on how the installation is configured and on your organisation's policies. QuickDesk Pro is not a cybersecurity product on its own.

Can it be used at a remote site with no corporate network?

Yes. In addition to Ethernet and Wi-Fi it supports 4G LTE. At pumping stations, substations or unmanned sites with mobile coverage, an access path independent of the corporate network can be set up. Connection quality depends on local network conditions; suitability is assessed together during the site survey.

What is needed for installation?

In KVM use: the target PC's HDMI output, one USB port and a power supply for the device; on the network side, one of Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 4G. No software is installed on the target PC. Remote power-on is only possible if the computer supports Wake-on-LAN and it is enabled in the BIOS and network card; restarting via GPIO requires suitable wiring to the computer's power/reset connection; suitability is checked during the site survey. In remote PLC maintenance, the PLC's Ethernet port is connected to the device's LAN port and the PLC and the LAN port must be on the same subnet; compatibility and the required network settings are assessed before installation. Network and access permissions are planned with your IT team; initial installation and settings are carried out by the MicronTech engineering team.

What is QuickDesk Pro not designed for?

It is not designed for everyday office screen sharing, presentations, video conferencing, high-frame-rate video or gaming. It should not be positioned as a general-purpose IoT gateway or data acquisition platform. It does not replace your PLC, SCADA, BMS, VPN or firewall; it works alongside them as a separate access channel.

Why buy QuickDesk Pro from MicronTech?

Besides being the Turkey distributor of QuickDesk Pro, MicronTech is an engineering company working in industrial automation, electronics board repair and enterprise networking. Before installation it reviews the role of the computer or PLC the device will connect to, the plant network and your IT security requirements, and acts as a single point of contact for the site survey, installation, initial settings and after-sales support.
