What Are Wi-Fi 7 320MHz Channels?

22 January 2025 MicronTech 5 min read

The best-known new feature of Wi-Fi 7 is its 320MHz-wide channels. You can think of channel width as the width of the road that carries the data: the wider the channel, the more data can travel at once.

In Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, the widest channel was 160MHz. Wi-Fi 7 doubles that width, allowing more data to be transferred.

Advantages of 320MHz Channels

The theoretical maximum speed defined in the Wi-Fi 7 standard is about 46 Gbps. Real-world speeds are far lower and depend on the devices' antenna count, distance and environment. On supported devices you can expect:

  • ✅ Lower latency on networks with many devices
  • ✅ Smoother 8K video streaming and cloud gaming
  • ✅ Large backup files transferred in less time
Technical Detail

320MHz channels are only available in the 6GHz band. Because this band is less crowded than 2.4GHz and 5GHz, interference from neighboring networks is usually lower. On the other hand, 6GHz signals pass through walls less easily, and coverage is shorter than on 5GHz.

Other Innovations in Wi-Fi 7

  • Multi-Link Operation (MLO): Simultaneous connections on more than one band (e.g. 5GHz and 6GHz)
  • 4096-QAM modulation: Carries 12 bits per symbol, giving about 20% higher data rates than Wi-Fi 6's 1024-QAM in good signal conditions
  • OFDMA improvements (Multi-RU): More efficient sharing of the channel between multiple users
