MMG Events’ Hybrid Event Setup: The Axis Platform and NETGEAR M4250

22 December 2024 MicronTech 4 min read

At hybrid events, people in the venue and online viewers follow the same broadcast. That means a large number of video and audio signals have to be carried reliably over the network. Event production company MMG Events uses its own Axis platform and NETGEAR M4250 AV Line network switches for this job.

Axis here is MMG's AV signal conversion and production appliance; it should not be confused with the IP camera manufacturer Axis Communications. According to a case study published by NETGEAR, MMG produced a four-day festival for the insurance sector that spanned 26 countries. More than 60,000 people took part, and 150 sessions were broadcast.

Project Highlights

  • ✅ More than 200 NDI signals: signals carried over the IP network with the NDI video protocol were routed and monitored centrally
  • ✅ Triple redundancy: backup paths for power, internet connectivity and streaming protocols (SRT, RTMP, Microsoft Teams)
  • ✅ Axis platform: handled signal conversion and a large number of outputs, with the vMix production software running directly on the appliance
  • ✅ NETGEAR M4250 AV Line: managed multicast traffic with ready-made profiles for protocols such as Dante, NDI and AES67 and the IGMP Plus feature

According to NETGEAR, only two of the 150 sessions had a short delay, and both were resolved in under a minute. The example shows that network design and redundancy matter as much as broadcast equipment at hybrid events.
