Mesh Wi-Fi systems are widely used to provide more even Wi-Fi coverage across different parts of homes and offices. Although many users assume that mesh devices provide internet on their own, these systems need a modem connection.
How Does Mesh Wi-Fi Work?
Mesh Wi-Fi is a system made up of a main router and satellite units connected to it, which together extend wireless coverage. The internet connection itself still comes from a modem (on fiber lines, a modem or ONT device).
The modem receives the connection from your internet service provider (ISP) and passes it to the main mesh router. The satellites then distribute the Wi-Fi signal to different parts of the home.
What to Consider When Setting Up a Mesh System
- ✅ Putting your modem in bridge mode prevents double NAT. If the modem cannot be bridged, running the mesh system in access point (AP) mode is another option
- ✅ Connect the mesh router to the modem with an Ethernet cable
- ✅ Make sure your modem's speed capacity is compatible with the mesh system
If your fiber connection is 1 Gbps or faster, whether the mesh system's WAN port and the link between units (backhaul) support that speed directly affects performance.
